ABOUT WNBA

The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is a women's professional basketball league in the United States. It was founded on April 24, 1996, and it began with eight teams: the Charlotte Sting, Cleveland Rockers, Houston Comets, and New York Liberty in the Eastern Conference, and the Los Angeles Sparks, Phoenix Mercury, Sacramento Monarchs, and Utah Starz in the Western Conference.

Fast forward to today, and the WNBA has expanded to 12 teams: the New York Liberty, Connecticut Sun, Indiana Fever, Atlanta Dream, Chicago Sky, Washington Mystics in the Eastern Conference, and the Minnesota Lynx, Las Vegas Aces, Seattle Storm, Phoenix Mercury, Dallas Wings, and Los Angeles Sparks in the Western Conference.

The regular season runs from May to September, with each team playing 40 games. The top eight teams (regardless of the conference) qualify for the playoffs, and the WNBA Finals are played in October. The WNBA also has a midseason tournament, the Commissioner's Cup, launched in 2021.

WNBA teams with the most league titles

Fifteen franchises have won the WNBA championship, with the Minnesota Lynx, Houston Comets (folded in 2008), and Seattle Storm having the most, with four each.

The Los Angeles Sparks, Phoenix Mercury, and Dallas Wings (formerly Detroit Shock) have three apiece. The Las Vegas Aces (formerly San Antonio Stars) have won twice, while the Sacramento Monarchs (folded in 2009), Washington Mystics, and Chicago Sky have one title each.

Meanwhile, the New York Liberty, Connecticut Suns, Atlanta Dream, and Charlotte Sting (folded in 2006) have made it to the WNBA Finals but never won, while former teams Cleveland Rockers (1997-2003), Portland Fire (2000-2002) and Miami Sol (2000-2002) have never qualified for the Finals.

Key awards

The WNBA gives out 13 individual awards to honor some of the league's top performers, including the Most Valuable Player Award (MVP), Finals MVP Award, Rookie of the Year Award (ROY), Most Improved Player of the Year Award (MIP), Defensive Player of the Year Award (DPOY), Sixth Player of the Year Award, Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award, Peak Performer: Points/Rebounds/Assists awards, Coach of the Year Award, Basketball Executive of the Year Award, and the Community Assist Award.

Retired numbers

The WNBA also pays tribute to the league's pioneers by retiring their jersey numbers. As things stand, 15 WNBA icons have their jerseys retired by their respective teams.
